If you’ve ever been on a sailboat, you’ve watched the sails when they aren’t trimmed appropriately. They will show some wrinkling and a little luffing (where a section of the sail flaps a bit). But a little winching of the mainsail or the jib and suddenly the wrinkles are gone and the sails are taut.
Wouldn’t that be nice for your facial skin? A little winching to tighten things up…
Thermage is kind of like that. By delivering heat energy into all three layers of the skin, this procedure — sometimes referred to as a facelift without surgery — tightens and smoothes your skin.
How Thermage works
Your skin is made up of three layers. The epidermis is the relatively thin outer layer of the skin. Beneath it is the dermis, a collagen-rich layer that is responsible for most of the skin’s structure. Below the dermis is the subcutaneous layer, also known as the fat layer, where even more collagen fibers live.
As you age, collagen production drops one additional percent every year after age 20. This decrease in collagen allows the sagging and wrinkle formation that is common with aging skin.
Thermage tightens and renews the skin’s collagen in all three layers of the skin. It uses Capacitive Radio Frequency technology to deliver heat energy into the lower layers of the skin. This causes two things to happen. First, the web of collagen immediately tightens, improving skin texture and tone. Second, for the next four to six months, the body creates new collagen in the area as a response to the perceived injury that the heat creates. Thermage is different than most skin-tightening treatments, as its results are obtained in a single treatment.
Where does Thermage work and how long does it take?
Thermage can be used on most parts of the body, especially the face, around the eyes, the abdomen, upper arms, back of the hands, thighs, and buttocks. Depending on the area treated, Thermage treatments at Spa Vitoria take as little as 20 minutes up to a full hour.
