IPL

Intense Pulsed Light

Freckles, age spots, and general pigmentation issues can be remedied with IPL/Intense Pulsed Light, also known as photofacial rejuvenation. The light from the IPL targets the pigment in the damaged skin cells. Immediately after treatment, the area is red and swollen, almost like a burn. Over the next few days the redness fades, but the brown in the damaged spots becomes darker and darker. Then the spot peels off. It can take up to 10 days for these darker spots to slough off, and up to 21 days to see your full results.

By changing the setting on the handpiece (which filters the light to target different colors) this treatment can also treat issues with skin redness — rosacea, flushing, and broken capillaries — caused by sun damage, alcohol, and spicy foods.

IPL is not only great for the face but can also be used on the neck, chest, arms, and hands. Treatments are spaced every three weeks for the face and every six weeks for areas of the body. On average it can take anywhere from two to six treatments depending on the severity of what is being treated. For more information on IPL, visit our blog.

FAQ:

What Conditions Does IPL Laser Treat?

Intense pulsed light therapy is used to improve the appearance of the skin and can be applied to the face, hands, neck, or chest areas of the body. With the ability to customize its frequency, each treatment will be personalized to each patient’s needs and skin goals. Whether you are seeking to remove age spots or eliminate the appearance of spider veins, IPL has the ability to change its settings to target specific imperfections. IPL can treat the following conditions:

  • Age spots
  • Broken blood vessels such as spider veins
  • Melasma
  • Port-wine stains
  • Rosacea
  • Sunspots and freckles

Am I A Candidate for IPL Laser?

Results from IPL laser treatments work best on people who have photo-aged or sun-damaged skin. If you experience uneven pigmentation on the skin from conditions such as rosacea or melasma, this treatment can also be beneficial. Patients who are in overall good health and have realistic expectations will be able to undergo IPL treatment.

IPL treatment is not recommended for patients with active acne or skin infections, as the laser works to treat conditions just below the skin’s surface. Treating skin with active acne or infection may put the patient at risk of spreading additional bacteria on the face. Laser treatments are not recommended for those who are pregnant.

Does IPL Laser Treatment Hurt?

IPL treatment is usually minimally painful. The only pain that would be felt is a stinging sensation as the laser hits the skin, similar to a rubber band snapping. In general, IPL treatment is a non-invasive procedure that allows for quick recovery and lasting results.

How Do I Prepare for My IPL Laser Treatment?

Patients can take precautionary measures to prepare for their treatment. These include:

  • Prepping and protecting the skin that will be treated by continuously wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
  • Consult with your doctor about stopping any medications that may interfere with laser treatments
  • Avoid smoking at least six weeks before your treatment
  • Plan for time off of work if you need extra time to recover

How Long Will It Take to Recover from IPL Laser Treatment?

Most patients can recover fully from IPL treatment within one week. Common side effects during recovery may be slight stinging, redness, or swelling in the treated area, but after a few days, these side effects fade. If freckles or age spots have been treated, you may notice your spots getting darker before they get lighter, which is normal. Patients may experience itching or crusting of the skin, which is also normal and part of the healing process. Most patients do not require taking time off work after this treatment.

How Long Will My Results Last?

The results from one IPL treatment can last up to one year. However, because the skin is constantly replacing itself, it’s recommended that patients commit to frequent IPL treatments within a year to maintain their desired results. Patients interested in seeing the longest-lasting results can schedule IPL treatment sessions every four to six weeks to ensure their skin is as refreshed and radiant as possible.
